Safety at Sea Training Day - BYOB
3 miles West of Buoy 32A
Saturday, May 30, 2026 1100 - 1500
Storm Trysail Club (STC), supported by the Storm Trysail Foundation (STF), created a new format for Safety-At-Sea training in 2021: “Do-It-Yourself Training Day”. We now refer to it as “BYOB” Day – Bring Your Own Boat Day. This on-the-water event encourages owners and crews to perform MOB Recovery and other safety drills on their own boats, with their own equipment, and their own crews. BYOB Day will be held on Saturday, May 30, two weeks after our Hands-On Safety at Sea Seminar at SUNY Maritime on May 16, allowing crews to immediately build upon those concepts through on-the-water practice. Newport-Bermuda Race entries will also wish to participate as part of their broader offshore preparation and to fulfill some of the onboard training requirements. See NBR Official Notice Board BYOB Day is scheduled in recognition of the offshore safety and crew-readiness expectations associated with events such as the Newport Bermuda Race. Crews are expected to have practiced essential emergency procedures—including man-overboard recovery—on their own vessels prior to the race. BYOB Day provides a structured opportunity for crews to conduct realistic MOB training on their own vessels, with their own equipment and crew, in advance of departure from Newport. A core tenet of STC’s Adult Hands-On Safety-At-Sea Seminar is that classroom and dockside instruction can only introduce concepts, techniques, and equipment. True competence is developed only through repeated practice aboard one’s own boat, with one’s own crew, until correct responses become instinctive, so to act properly in the moment. “Train the way you fight, and fight the way you train!” is a core training philosophy of the U.S. Marine Corps that supports this practical approach. STF will provide coaches and coach boats, our innovative MOB “dummies” (which simulate the weight of a 180 lb. crew) for recovery training, as well as pick-up sticks/tall buoys, for all event registrants. A maximum of [16] boats will be registered. Preference will be given to boats entering the Newport Bermuda Race. NOTE: STC/STF are not providing ANY certification through the BYOB Day event. All skippers and crews are solely responsible for meeting the requirements of any event in which they plan to participate. We recommend all participants to review the following information on MOB Recovery techniques: MOB Recovery – MidLine Lift Video
