Storm Trysail Club Members succeed at the ORC Worlds in Newport

The ORC Worlds last week in Newport couldn't have enjoyed better conditions, with perfect weather enhancing six days of intense competition. Storm Trysail Club members played a pivotal role both on and off the water, contributing to the event's success from the organizational level to the racing itself. Matt Gallagher served as Race Chair, while Ed Cesare, the Measurement and Ratings Chair at NYYC, was key in selecting the optimal distance courses and providing critical weather forecasts.

In ORC 0, STC members Andrew Berdon and Peter Askew faced off in a dramatic tie for second place, with Askew’s Botin 52 Wizard ultimately winning the tiebreaker against Berdon’s TP 52 Summer Storm. Berdon reflected, "It was our first 52 regatta, and we were happy to be in the mix. It was a lot of fun out there."

In ORC B, John Brim's Italia 11.98 finished second after a fierce tacking duel with the victorious Polish team, while Bill Baxter secured third aboard his J/111 Fireball, edging out STC Vice Commodore Andrew Weiss on Christopher Dragon with many STC Members onboard. Constantine Baris also represented STC in ORC B with his J/122, Direwolf. Baxter summed up the experience by saying, "We had good races. ORC competition is amazing. Newport, nothing better."

ORC A was dominated by Storm Trysail Club members, with five of the top six spots held by STC skippers. Austin and Gwen Fragomen’s near-perfect regatta with Interlodge, a Botin 44, saw them win all but one race, securing first place. Don Thinschmidt’s Abracadabra placed second, maintaining remarkable consistency. STC member Will Gammell, sailing aboard the Ker 43, remarked, “Anytime you can sail seven days of glorious weather in Newport in October, how can it get any better?” Two of the top Swan 42s also had STC members at the helm, with Paul Zabetakis on Impetuous and Henry Brauer placing third on Tio Loco. Tom Rich secured sixth place aboard his new GP 42, Settler.

Adding to the excitement, the Maxi 72s competed in their North American Championship, with STC member Hap Fauth’s Bella Mente taking second place.

Congratulations to all the STC sailors for their outstanding performances in such a competitive and memorable event!  Be sure to check out all the recap videos, photos, and results.
