US Sailing Sanctioned Hands-On Safety at Sea Seminar

Storm Trysail Club will host their annual spring US Sailing Sanctioned Hands-On Safety At Sea Training Seminar on May 18, 2024

The seminar will be a one full-day event at SUNY Maritime College.

Building on the success of past seminars, this event will follow an interactive curriculum where participants will learn about damage control, fire distress rockets and flares, put out fires, set storm sails, and exercise water survival skills & use of life rafts, perform crew overboard (COB) rescue among other activities.

One of three safety at sea certifications can be earned by a combination of participation in the hands-on training seminar and completion of online course material:

  • US Sailing Sanctioned Offshore Safety at Sea Course certificate by participating in the Hands-On Training Seminar and viewing the Storm Trysail Club’s Video Library: https://stormtrysail.org/sas-resources/#Videos
  • US Sailing Sanctioned International Offshore Safety at Sea Course with Hands-On Training certificate by completion of the US Sailing Safety at Sea: Offshore Online Course (Units 1-15) in advance of and participating in the Hands-On Training Seminar
  • US Sailing Sanctioned International Offshore Safety at Sea Refresher Course (World Sailing Certificate Refresh – Taken within the last 10 years) by completion of the US Sailing Safety at Sea: Offshore Upgrade Online Course (Units 11-15) in advance of an participating in the Hands-On Training Seminar

Should you opt for a certification that includes a US Sailing Safety at Sea online course you will be issued a unique course code and information on how to access the online courses following a completed registration and payment for the SUNY SAS Hands-On Safety at Sea seminar.

Please pay special attention to the COB sections of the videos.  Additionally, you must study the attached Control Grid. SASDamageControlGrid copy  Another great resource is the SAS Leadership and Seamanship Report.  There will be an online quiz after the seminar.

Course Curriculum

  • On the water session with the latest advances in crew overboard recovery, setting storm sails & emergency steering
  • Pool session with PFD, life raft use and combating hypothermia
  • Firefighting instruction, use of flares and pyrotechnics
  • Emergency communications and Search & Rescue
  • Damage control and much more

0700-0745 Registration – MAC Academic Building, next to Sailing Center 
0745-0900 Opening Session
0900-1630 Participants will rotate between various activities including: Damage Control, Fire Fighting/Pyrotechnics, Pool/In Water Survival and On the Water MOB
1630-1745  Closing Session & Quiz
Coffee and bagels, lunch and afternoon coffee and snacks are provided

What to Bring

The seminar will be an all-day affair. You will be in the classroom, in the pool and outdoors for the fire safety segment and on a boat practicing MOB. Please be prepared for all of these different environments.

We suggest you bring the following:

  • Foul/Cold Weather Sailing Gear for on-the-water activities (weather dependent)
  • Inflatable PFD, spare CO2 cartridge (or a 2nd offshore/dinghy style lifejacket) and safety tether
  • Second set of old foul weather gear for pool (You will be jumping in the pool with all of your foul weather gear on and your inflatable PFD, so please make sure you have a towel and change of clothes and a second set of foul weather gear for your other outside activities)

Fees

  • Attendance at the seminar is limited and is open to both racers and cruisers. Do not wait to register. 
  • The admissions fee for Hands-On training seminar and the US Sailing Sanctioned Offshore Safety at Sea Course certificate is $325 and includes breakfast pastries and coffee, lunch and afternoon snacks and refreshments.
  • If you are interested in earning your US Sailing Sanctioned International Offshore Safety at Sea Course with Hands-On Training certificate there is an additional fee of $135 for the US Sailing online course units 1-15. Total Course fee is: $460
  • If you are interested in earning your US Sailing Sanctioned International Offshore Safety at Sea Refresher Course (aka World Sailing certificate refresh) there is an additional fee of $50 for the US Sailing online course units 11-15. Total Course fee is: $375

Payment is due in FULL at the time of registration.  Once your registration payment has been processed, you will receive a registration confirmation email from the Storm Trysail Club.  For those opting to include US Sailing Safety at Sea online course content a separate email will be sent to you that will include important information about accessing your online course.
