2018 Hands-on Safety-at-Sea Seminar sanctioned by US Sailing – Bigger and Better

The Storm Trysail Club Foundation will be hosting its annual US Sailing Sanctioned Hands-On Safety-at-Sea Seminar on Saturday May 19, 2018, at SUNY Maritime College in the Bronx, New York. Following on the success of the 2017 program, the 2018 Seminar will again offer two instructional tracks: Level 100 for new participants and Level 200 available only to sailors planning on participating in the 2018 Bermuda Race who have previously attended a Level 100 Seminar.

Level 100 – Core SAS Training For Any Sailor

At the seminar, first-time attendees will participate in four 90-minute Hands-on "blocks" bracketed by opening and closing sessions. The four blocks include: On-the-Water man overboard and storm sails training; Survival Training in the swimming pool using inflatable PFDs and life rafts; Firefighting and Flares, where fires are extinguished and hand held flares and parachute flares are fired by each person; Damage Control both demonstrated and hands-on practice of key damage control skills. Highly qualified instructors and coaches are involved throughout.

The seminar will be supplemented by Storm Trysail's educational Safety-at-Sea Video Library produced by long time Storm Trysail member Gary Jobson. These videos cover a broad range of safety-at-sea subjects and will be available to attendees online prior to the seminar. The videos and other supplemental training documents must be viewed before arrival at the seminar.
Level 200 – Advanced SAS Training

Since 2018 is a Bermuda Race year, the course will be available exclusively to sailors racing to Bermuda or in another major ocean race and who have previously taken a Level 100 course. The Level 200 sailors will spend half the day on the water, practicing multiple man overboard recovery techniques (with a live survival swimmer), reefing and un-reefing sails, setting storm sails, and inflating a raft and actually abandoning ship.

The remaining half of the Level 200 day will be in a classroom setting with content focused solely on the aspects of safety-at-sea relevant to sailors in the 2018 Bermuda Race. For example, one Level 200 classroom session will feature a full 90 minutes with weather and Gulfstream expert Frank Bohlen. Sessions in damage control, emergency management scenarios, and radio communications are also being planned.

Safety-at-Sea Certification

All seminar attendees, both Levels 100 and 200, will receive US Sailing Offshore Certification (included in the basic seminar fee). For those interested in obtaining World Sailing’s International Offshore Certification, there is an additional fee charged at registration providing access to US Sailing’s Offshore Online program that must be successfully completed to obtain International Offshore Certification.
