Marblehead once again set a gorgeous background for the annual Ted Hood Regatta organized by the Storm Trysail Club. The 2025 event featured a strong fleet and 3 days of highly competitive racing. Strong winds building throughout the weekend ensured a full weekend of action. Across two one design and three PHRF classes, the racing was incredibly tight with strong performances from all teams.
Day 1: Pursuit Race
The first race of the weekend saw 20 boats across two classes battle it out in a Friday afternoon pursuit race. The non-spinnaker class was won by Stag, a Nelson Marek 30, followed closely behind by J/120 Glide, and Frers 36 Hall Pass. In the spinnaker class, IMX 45 Lynx won the day with Beneteau First 36.7 MOD Barracuda and Farr 44 Africa B Squad rounding out the podium.
Day 2: Sunshine and Steady Breeze
The first of three races on Saturday got underway in the early afternoon with winds feeling a tad light at five to seven knots. However, as the day progressed the breeze steadily increased and held between six and 12 knots for the next two races.
In the two one design divisions, No Quarter and Clown Car won the day in the J/105 and J/70 fleets, respectively. No Quarter crossed the finish line first in the day’s opening and final races, while placing a solid third in the second contest. Hot on their trail was Brouhaha winning the second race and putting up second and third place finishes in the other two.
The J/70s were similarly closely lined up with Clown Car putting up third, second, and first place finishes across the day’s three races. Local favorite Bad Hombres ended the day just one point behind in second place.
Racing in the three PHRF divisions was breathtakingly close. The longest corrected time gap between first and second place on the day was just over two minutes, with many races being decided by only seconds. C&C 40-2 TR Ares came out on top in the Nonspinnaker Division, while Spinnaker A was won by MAT 1220 Heat Wave and Spinnaker B by Africa B Squad.
Day 3: No Rest For the Weary
Sunday’s racing was action packed as wind held between 10 and 15 knots, giving the Race Committee the opportunity to start three races throughout the day.
No Quarter once again took top honors in the J/105 fleet, with strong performances from Brouhaha and Knotless keeping them on their toes. Bad Hombres overtook Clown Car in the J/70s with Spring ending the day in a close third.
PHRF divisions again saw little daylight between top finishers across the day’s three races. C&C 41 Man Of War, Lynx, and Africa B-Squad won their respective divisions for the day.
Celebration and Awards Recap
After three stunning days of racing, sailors and spectators took to the tent at Eastern Yacht Club to share stories of the weekend, raise a glass, and celebrate the victors.
No Quarter won overall amongst the J/105s. After trading daily wins, Bad Hombres bested Clown Car for the overall title in the J/70 fleet. PHRF Nonspinnaker was won by Man Of War. Lynx took the Spinnaker A top spot by just 1 point over Heat Wave. Rounding out the winners in Spinnaker B was Africa B Squad.
“The weekend went very well, with great conditions allowing yachts in all classes to battle it out across 30 races total.” said Race Chair Clarke Smith. “After the second race on Sunday, I told the Race Committee to keep them racing so we could take full advantage of a beautiful weekend.”
