A historic event returns to the world stage this month—and several Storm Trysail Club (STC) members are right in the middle of the action. The 2025 Admiral’s Cup, long regarded as the unofficial world championship of ocean racing, is back after a 22-year hiatus. Organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC)—celebrating its 100th anniversary this year—the regatta runs July 17 to August 1 and features a mix of offshore and inshore racing designed to test every facet of a team’s skill and endurance.
At its height, the Admiral’s Cup was the crown jewel of team-based big boat racing, with teams of yachts representing countries or clubs in a blend of tactical inshore contests and grueling offshore passages. The 2025 edition stays true to that legacy, beginning with the Channel Race (July 19)—a 24-hour offshore lap around the Isle of Wight—followed by three days of inshore racing (July 22–24). The finale is the legendary Rolex Fastnet Race, starting July 26, serving as the grand finale with the highest points weighting.
Though STC doesn’t have its own team entered, our members are proudly representing across several competitive entries:
- Ron O’Hanley’s Privateer (Cookson 50) is racing under the American flag with a seasoned crew including Jesse Fielding, Tim Dawson, John Hayes, and Kyle Martin.
- Don Thinschmidt is onboard Abracadabra (Ker Sydney GTS 43), joined by STC member Will Gammell.
- Cole Brauer is crewing aboard Jolt 6, racing with Team Malizia teammates as a tune-up for the Ocean Race Europe.
- James Murray is campaigning his GP42 Callisto, another strong contender on the line.
Teams will battle for points across all races—with the offshore and inshore results weighted equally—making this a true all-around test of seamanship and strategy.
