The Storm Trysail Ted Hood Regatta this past weekend featured 38 boats in five different classes, which gave competitors in the J/70 and J/105 fleets their own starting line while also including three divisions for the ORR (Offshore Racing Rule), PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet) Spinnaker and PHRF Jim and Main. The event is organized by the Storm Trysail Club and hosted by Eastern Yacht Club with support from Corinthian and Boston Yacht Clubs.
Each year, the Storm Trysail Club awards a special trophy named after the late Steve Cruse, a Marblehead sailmaker who worked at Hood Sailmakers, Doyle Sailmakers, and North Sailmakers throughout his long career. Cruse was a great sailor, shipmate, and friend to many in Marblehead and frequently shared his knowledge with fellow competitors to improve the sport. This year the Steve Cruse Trophy was presented to Jud and Cindy Smith, and Bump Wilcox of Marblehead, who also placed first in the ORRez Class on board AFRICA.
The conditions for this year’s race held August 18-20, featured medium breeze with plenty of shifts on Friday, and with medium to heavy air on Saturday with winds gusting to 22 knots. Sunday offered lighter winds with 8 to 15 knots, making it a great final day to decide the winners.
The overall winners by class were:
1st place AFRICA, ORRez Class
1st place Sea Bliss, PHRF Spinnaker
1st place Goldeneye, PHRF JAM class
1st Place Key Player, J/70 Cla
1st place No Quarter, J/105 Class
