“With the present conditions on Rhode Island Sound and the forecast we got for today. We are not planning on racing,” said Race Director Dick Neville with the gusting wind howling by him at Race Headquarters at Champlin’s Resort and Marina this morning. “We have gotten three days of great racing and everybody s pretty tired. With a good forecast for tomorrow, we plan to get in two races so we are canceling racing for the day.”
SeaTactics’ meteorologist, Chelsea Freas, said in her McMichael Weather Briefing that the winds at 7:30 am were already higher than the models in the mid-twenties, so it was already set up to be too windy for racing. As well as a small craft advisory issued by the National Weather Service.
Traditionally, Block Island Race Week used to have a lay day for sailors to get some rest. This was when it was also a six-day Race Week. 2015 was the last year there was even a Race Week with five days of racing due to quality conditions. In 2017, racing on Monday was canceled due to fog. In 2019, there was no wind on Wednesday and in 2021, there was both fog and no wind on Friday.
This left the 1,400 sailors to recover from three long hard days of racing and enjoy the island and some Mount Gay Rum.
A quality sailing kit is essential to keep you protected from the varying elements at Block Island Race Week, so Storm Trysail Club is happy to have Helly Hansen signed on as the Official Clothing Supplier for Block Island Race Week presented by Margaritaville.
They will be onsite during the event with any of your technical sailing gear needs at the Team1Newport regatta store.
