Varsity sailor at USNA graduating in 1973. Naval aviator, test pilot, and astronaut who was pilot on two space shuttle missions. Aerospace executive and after retirement, joined the faculty of USNA as a distinguished visiting professor of aerospace engineering. Volunteer coach with the Varsity Offshore Sailing Team and an Instructor Skipper with the Offshore Sail Training Squadron, leading expeditions as a part of midshipmen summer leadership training as well as the training, qualification, and selection of skippers and executive officers for the boats and crews participating in that program. A lifetime sailor who has sailed and raced in many events in a variety of locations and conditions. Most recently has been racing Chesapeake Bay Sailing Log Canoes every season for the last 15 years. Currently skipper of the log Canoe Flying Cloud that has just completed an extensive refurbishment and will be ready to rejoin the fleet in the 2021 season.
