Long Island Sound Makes Way for
US-IRC Championship and PHRF Fall Classic

GREENWICH, CONN. (Sept. 11, 2009) – A new sailing event – the US-IRC Championship of Long Island Sound and PHRF Fall Classic -- has been announced jointly by the Riverside Yacht Club (RYC) of Greenwich, Conn., and the Storm Trysail Club (STC), headquartered in Larchmont, N.Y. The event, which will be held annually, will take place at Riverside Yacht Club over the weekend of September 18-19 in 2010.

“We are delighted to partner with the Storm Trysail Club for an IRC event that will determine a first-ever IRC champion for Long Island Sound and also welcome PHRF sailors to our club for a first-class event that will combine great racing with exceptional shore-side events,” said Walt Alder, Riverside Yacht Club’s incoming commodore. Alder added that racing will take place on Western Long Island Sound and will benefit from the dependable September winds there as well as the combined race committee expertise of the RYC and STC.

"The Storm Trysail Club was one of the early promoters of IRC in this country, and IRC has been growing in the Long Island Sound area ever since," said Jim Bishop, the commodore of that national organization, which is for sailors with extensive offshore experience.  “In addition to the Rolex US-IRC National Championship, there are US-IRC Championships for the Great Lakes, the Pacific Coast, the East Coast, San Francisco…and now Long Island Sound.”

About Riverside Yacht Club

Riverside Yacht Club, founded in 1888, is located in Riverside, part of the Connecticut town of Greenwich on western Long Island Sound.  Throughout its history, the Club has dedicated itself to the support and encouragement of sailing and related activities.  As part of this mission, Riverside Yacht Club’s committed membership hosts regattas at the local, regional, national, and world championship levels.

About the Storm Trysail Club

The Storm Trysail Club, reflecting in its name the sail which sailors must shorten when facing adverse conditions, is one of the world’s most respected sailing clubs, with its membership comprised strictly of skilled blue water and ocean racing sailors. In addition to holding various prestigious offshore racing events (among them the Block Island Race, Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race and Pineapple Cup Montego Bay Race), STC hosts the biennial Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex and works year-round to grow the sport of ocean racing. It was one of the early leaders in establishing and promoting the use of the IRC rating system in North America, and it has developed, with the Transpacific Yacht Club, the Storm Trysail Transpac 65.  With an added mission to encourage young sailors to become big-boat racers, the Storm Trysail Foundation hosts the annual Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta (scheduled to return to Larchmont Yacht Club on October 10-11, 2009) in addition to several Junior Safety-at-Sea Seminars.
